Half-life. The time required for half of a quantity of a radioactive substance to decay. Constant, regardless of how much of the substance remains. Carbon-14 has a half-life of 5,730 years. Polonium-214 has a half-life of 164 microseconds. The concept applies, imprecisely but usefully, to the shelf life of information.
